The Making of Ready For The SummerTime
I call this the music video that went totally not according to plan, but still came out great nevertheless. "Ready For The Summertime" was created from a very cold winter and from what I initially thought was an unsuccessful video shoot. First reason being that the video was organized at the last minute between my tour dates. Some late shows were added to the schedule and changed the date that I originally had in mind to shoot the video. This made it a little difficult to get a committed cast and crew on set. Second, I originally planned on shooting the video for my song "Style On Them", but that didn't quite workout due to the lack of planning and lack of footage we recorded that day. Me and my Bredren Nicko Rebel came up with this cool treatment for the video to have a bunch of kids come from different neighborhoods with their instruments, meet up at one location, and have a big jam session. It sounded good in theory, but I underestimated the power of boredom and hunger amongst young children.
Fast forward to the video shoot on Sunday, April 20th, 2014. My long time friend and artist GleNN BlaKK, along with his Son Ben BlaKK, showed up on set first. As soon as Ben gets on set, I can already tell he is hungry. Luckily I brought a bunch of snacks and drinks that I knew the kids would like. After all, I'm still a kid too. Just when I was ready to get moving with the video shoot, Ben started to flex his acting muscles like he was Will Smith or Denzel, so I had to pay him in one of the universal forms of child currency.... Cheetos!!! Once he got his payment, Ben BlaKK was officially ready to go. With the help of his father motivating him, we knocked out all of Ben's scenes in no time. He was a true professional. He earned his salary, his bonus Cheetos, and some other goodies. Once the BlaKK family made their departure, more people started to make their way to the set location. One Brother being Bottles Belafonte, who is always willing to help others. He was responsible for bringing the majority of the beautiful people in the video on set with a few phone calls. This video would of never even happened without this good Brother.
Bottles was able to contact Mrs. Crystal Woods, and she allowed her beautiful children to pretty much star in the video. They all did an amazing job for what I assumed was their first video shoot. Some of my other amazing friends started to appear out of no where, and the energy on set turned up quickly. The cool thing about this video is that it was Green friendly. No alternative current was used on set, and I didn't really care if this video looked real or simulated. It was just nice to see a group children having fun together with no stress or negativity in sight. So even though I didn't get as much footage as I would have initially liked, I was happy with the outcome leaving the set. Which further proves these great words of wisdom: "You don't always get what you want, but you get what you need."
So I got a bunch of priceless footage, and I knew I had to do something with it. Since using the footage for Style On Them wasn't an option, I decided to make another song from scratch, and try and use the footage for whatever I came up with. I ended up creating a bass heavy track that had a Miami Bass feel to it. Growing up in Miami in the 90s as well as being a DJ, I was heavily influenced by Uncle Luke, Uncle Al, and DJ Laz just to name a few. I also got to give a quick shoutout to my boys Society, even though their sound had a more New York feel.
Now for the chain reaction... Once I finished putting the track together, I wrote a pretty simple hook while driving on FDR Drive in NYC. Within a few weeks I flew to Miami. Laid down my vocals at Rebel Kultcha Studios with engineer extraordinaire Nicko Rebel. He linked me up with the sweet sounding Dejah, and she breathed an entirely new life into the song. Giving it an energy that matched the energy on the video shoot. Then I had to wait for an entire year to drop the song since Summer was upon us again. I wanted to release this song during the Spring to give listeners something to look forward to. Now that Summer 2015 is around the corner. I present to you, Ready For The Summertime.
